Security Camera Policy
Library Board approved in 2026. Updated on 9/1/2026.
The Melrose Park Public Library uses security cameras to improve the safety and security of library users and staff by discouraging inappropriate and illegal behavior, to assist library staff in preventing the occurrence of such behavior, and, when necessary, to provide law enforcement assistance in prosecuting criminal activity while adhering to applicable federal, state, and local laws.
Purpose and Placement
- Video recording cameras will be used in public spaces of the library, including entrances and exits, service desks, seating areas, common areas, and the library parking lot. Audio recordings will not be made.
- Cameras will not be installed in areas of the library where individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy such as restrooms and private offices.
- Signs will be posted at the building entrance and throughout the library informing the public and the staff that cameras are in use.
- Because cameras will not be continuously monitored, the public and staff should take appropriate precautions for their safety and for the security of their personal property. The library is not responsible for loss of property or personal injury.
- Recordings will typically be kept for approximately 30 days with the exception of appropriate still shots or selected portions of the recorded data related to specific incidents.
Use/Disclosure of Video Recordings
- Access to recordings is restricted to designated staff.
- Access is allowed by law enforcement when pursuant to subpoena, court order, or as permitted by law.
- Access is allowed by the general public under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.
